Over The rainbow is about the decline of South Africa as a rainbow nation, what it promised and failed to deliver. Athi-Patra Ruga digs into the collective memory and national myths of South Africa. Together with South African artist Angel Ho, he plays his own version of ‘Weekend Special’ by Brenda Fassie as a tribute to the late pop idol, known as ‘Madonna of the Townships’. Glitter and glamor is used by Athi-Patra Ruga as a response to trauma, sadness and social inequality. In his words, ‘humour, colour, fashion and pop music have as much power as anger and indignation.’
