Zimbabwean artist nora chipaumire creates work across movement, objects, sound, performance and visual art. Her practice explores African, Black and female imaginaries through refusal, defiance, contradiction and self-determination.

Her debut film Afro Promo #1 Kinglady is a colourful, ironic and futurist Afro-feminist manifesto. Chipaumire places her feet on the land and claims herself as Kinglady of that same land, once colonised. Using low-tech, DIY aesthetics, fashion and pop culture become tools for self-invention and self-determination. At the centre of the film is a Black African female superhero whose powers are the mastery of time, space and energy – expressed through dance.

Following the screening, nora chipaumire joins Jay Pather, artistic leader of Afrovibes, for a conversation about her work and its connection to this year’s festival theme, Soil | Soul.
