iTi Ritual Studies is a performance by South African artist Yonela Makoba, based on the Xhosa ritual iTi: an intimate tea ceremony honouring female ancestors and matriarchs. Makoba takes on the position of a child sitting at the feet of an elder, drinking tea from a saucer passed down through generations. Through this gesture, she explores what has been lost, hidden or preserved only in fragments. The ceremony creates space for memories and stories to emerge, like the everyday knowledge shared around the kitchen table over tea.
For Afrovibes, Makoba is redeveloping iTi Ritual Studies during a residency at Framer Framed, responding to the Amsterdam location.

Through the circulation of tea and the colonial exchange between South Africa and the Netherlands, she explores the relationship between land, labour and ritual knowledge. She also considers how rituals change through distance, language and time. The audience is invited to sit, listen and open themselves to a shared experience of memory, loss and connection, in which the voices of female ancestors are brought to life.
