In If our Ancestors could speak, the dancers of SboNdaba Dance Company from South Africa explore the history of the oldest human inhabitants of Southern Africa: the Khoisan. Their story begins centuries ago at a time when people were free to hunt in their own land. Towards the end of the 17th century, most of the Western Cape in South Africa came under Dutch control. The Khoisan were dispossessed, exterminated or enslaved. They were forced to work on farms along with new arrivals, slaves who had been transported to the Cape from far across the oceans. These are the ancestors of South Africa’s marginalised people living in harsh conditions in the Cape Flats and townships. Poverty still reigns supreme among them, but the dancers of SboNdaba Dance Company show that they are resilient survivors!
