Set around a mound of sand, I want Revenge, Grandma explores themes of ancestry and memory. Through four key ideas – restitution, reparations, return and revenge – Colleen Ndemeh Fitzgerald reflects on the lasting impact of the colonial past and invites audiences to consider what restoration might mean. What follows centuries of colonial violence?
Although revenge forms part of Fitzgerald’s artistic framework, vengeance itself is not at the centre of the work. Instead, she explores how colonial legacies and intergenerational trauma become embedded in bodies and relationships, passing from one generation to the next. The figure of the ‘grandma’ acts as a mirror of ancestry and refers to Fitzgerald’s Kpelle roots.
In the final scene, the space transforms into a site of collective release. Through a shared dance around a mound of earth, space emerges for a symbolic reunion of body, spirit and soil.
