Sporen van Haar (Traces of Hair) is a multidisciplinary theatre performance in which major themes of struggle and survival in the colonies are depicted from a female and African perspective in Afro-futuristic forms. The inspiration is the West African black rice that was smuggled along in the hair of Maroon women and its significance today. The performance is a tribute to Maroon women, with the grain of rice symbolising the (evidence) trails in our present that, along the trail of rice, lead us back to transatlantic slavery and African roots.
A story about the risks and dangers the Maroon women braved, the loss of their own land, resilience, the preservation of their own culture within an extreme system of oppression, a new relationship with the Surinamese forests and the knowledge of earth, nature and agriculture.
‘The gentleness and freedom of this direction by Berith Danse and Maroon culture specialist Josè Tojo is extraordinarily striking and very contagious, as it stands right up against the logic of well-made play and flawless production. This kind of candid work is something you want to see more often in theatre’. Theaterkrant, Keuze van de criticus.
