In Épique ! (Pour Yikakou), choreographer and performer Nadia Beugré embarks on a profound journey back to her origins. She returns to Yikakou, the abandoned village of her ancestors in Côte d’Ivoire. A place once believed to be cursed, left deserted and gradually reclaimed by the forest.
Throughout this performative journey, Beugré is guided by two powerful female figures. The first is her grandmother, who gave her the name Gbahihonon: ‘the woman who says what she sees’. The second is Dô Kamissa, a legendary woman who, after suffering injustice at the hands of her brother, transformed herself into a buffalo to destroy his land. Beugré summons these ancestral figures and embodies their stories. She intertwines her own history with that of the women who continue to live through her, moving between personal memory and collective history.
On stage, she is joined by two other women: a griot, storyteller of forgotten histories, and a musician and singer. Together, they create a layered performance in which words, music and movement intertwine.
Épique ! is a powerful and deeply moving pilgrimage about ancestry, memory and the traces generations leave behind. Rooted in a personal story, the performance resonates with universal questions of land, identity and heritage.
