For the thirteenth time the Afrovibes Festival will be held from 5 to 15 October in Amsterdam, Utrecht, The Hague and Rotterdam. Every festival, Afrovibes settles down temporarily in two theaters in each of these four major cities with a multidisciplinary performing arts programme. Modern, current and innovative theater and dance performances, music and film from urban cultural hotspots in Africa. The festival focuses on current developments in theater and dance in the urban arts circuit in Africa, and presents a young generation of innovative African artists that introduces us to a new vison of young urban Africa. Thereby collaboration is sought with young Dutch performing artists.
Tradition versus modernity
Afrovibes presents today's most surprising, intriguing and extraordinary African artists and creators. With a different theme every festival edition Afrovibes responds to current and contemporary issues. This year theme of the festival is Tradition versus Modernity. Tradition gives you a sense of belonging, of your roots and can give guidance in a modern and rapidly changing society. A young generation of African performing artists and creatives is looking for the connections between modernity, tradition and progress, in the content of their work, the forms and structures they choose, their playing style and genres. This generation of African makers asks themselves the question: What does it mean to be black? What is it like to be an African? How do we preserve our culture and traditions in a modernizing Africa. By connecting traditions to modernity, this young generation recovers the positive, self-assured feeling of their roots.
