Afrovibes opgenomen in het Kunstenplan van de Gemeente Amsterdam 2013-2016

Zaterdag 29 september is het Afrovibes Festival 2012 in Nederland afgesloten met zeer druk bezochte voorstellingen en een geweldige late night party met Ntjam Rosie en DJ's.
Het festival gaat op 1 oktober gedurende drie weken verder in Engeland en Wales.

De film Before Dawn (Maarten Rens, 1088) over de CASA-conferentie in 1987, die werd vertoond op zaterdagmiddag is nu ook online te bekijken.

Wie gaat het Township Café vanaf 18.00uur hosten? Dat zijn Akwasi Ansah en Zanillya Farrell.

Zanillya Farrell en Akwasi Ansah treden op als gastvrouw en gastheer in het Townshipcafé.
Akwasi Ansah heeft een platencontract bij hiphoplabel TopNotch, en heeft als lid van hiphopformatie Zwart Licht zijn debuutalbum Bliksemschicht uitgebracht. Zanillya Maria Farrell (1983) fuseert verschillende muziekstijlen met hiphop en maakt een muzikale ontdekkingsreis in Papiamento, Nederlands en Engels. Zanillya heeft op diverse evenementen en podia gestaan waaronder Oerol, het Breaking Walls Festival, de Uitmarkt, het Dunya Festival en allerlei poppodia.

Afrovibes landt over 10 dagen

Van 24 t/m 29 september is het Afrovibes festival in Nederland. Hart van het festival is het MC Theater op het Westergasterrein in Amsterdam. Delen van het festivalprogramma zijn te zien in Utrecht (Stadsschouwburg), Eindhoven (Parktheater) en in het Bijlmer Parktheater in Amsterdam Zuidoost.

Interview with Qudus Onikeku

Dance has always been at the centre of the Afrovibes Festival. This year's visitors should not miss the strong dance piece My Exile is in my Head by emerging choreographer and dancer Qudus Onikeku (1984). He is a performer from Nigeria who is spreading his art via France to the rest of the world. The performance he will present at Afrovibes is inspired by the writings of Wole Soyinka, winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1986, as well as by his own experience of living far away from home.

Performance poets provide true festival mood

The Three Furies is a dynamic poetry-in-performance film, written, devised and performed by three spoken word artists: Zena Edwards (UK), Mbali Vilakazi (South Africa) and Clara Opoku (The Netherlands / Ghana). The three artists translate, embody and embolden the energy of the Greek mythical legend of the Three Furies, who are first and foremost the protectors of women and children. Thework was shot partly on location, partly in the studio and during two live performances in April 2012: in Amsterdam and in London. This is a special Afrovibes Festival commissioned work made with funds from Arts Council England and British Council South Africa. The film will be part of the Afrovibes Festival 2012. And Zena Edwards will perform live.

A portrait of the new artistic director of Afrovibes

A new face had appeared during the first Afrovibes event of this year during the festival programme launch party on April 13th. It’s the cheerful face of James Ngcobo (1969), Afrovibes’ new artistic director. It was the first time a Dutch audience had a chance to meet him and got to know what drives him. At the Afrovibes Festival this year, he will bring the most exciting performances to the Netherlands from upcoming and well-known African artists. But first, the newfound artistic director deserves an introduction.
