Afgelopen dinsdag, 23 maart, overleed de Zuid-Afrikaanse muzikant, dichter en singer/songwriter Syd Kitchen. Syd was onze gast op het afgelopen Afrovibes Festival, waar hij en Madala Kunene als BAFO BAFO de dansvoorstelling Blue Blood van Gregory Maqoma muzikaal onderbouwden.
Wij hebben Syd tijdens het festival leren kennen als een begaafd en bevlogen muzikant, en een warm, fijn en bijzonder mens. Net als de velen die hij inspireerde met zijn muziek zullen ook wij hem missen. bestuur en directie Afrovibes Gregory Maqoma herdacht Syd eerder deze week met deze woorden:“It is a gloom day for me as I recall my encounters with music legend Bafo Syd Kitchen. He sadly passed away in a hospice in Durban from his short battle with cancer. The results of the VDT production 'Blue Blood' resonates with his music, craft, history and heritage. Together with Madala Kunene they managed to inspire the process of creation and left behind a priceless rich legacy not only with us but with a small audience that gathered at the Dance Space studio in Newtown and the audiences at the Afrovibes Festival in the Netherlands. When I spoke to Bafo last week, trying to figure out if he will be able to join us in Zimbabwe end of April, the only thing he could say was 'it’s in God's hands Bafo' I guess it was indeed in God’s hands. We will forever be grateful to his willingness to give and share with us his talents and gifts. He will be sadly missed by all at VDT. Our prayers are with his family, fans and all those he touched. May his soul rest in peace.” |
De twee zeer verschillende bijdragen van beide muzikanten schiep op toneel een muzikale magie: Syd’s gebruik van elementen uit vele muzikale stijlen (van Celtic, Afrikaans, Jazz, tot Cajun) werd in balans gebracht door Madala’s ongevenaarde Maskanda groove. Het samenspel van deze twee gitaristen resulteerde in een prachtig muzikaal landschap dat zich diep in het bewustzijn nestelde.
